Human Alien Romance- The Alien Girlfriend
A classic staple of many harem anime and anime in general is the hot alien girlfriend, whether it be an alien or supernatural. Given that this is anime science 101, we are going leave any sort of magical answer to the question of can you have that hot alien girlfriend as your waifu. One last bit to consider here is that I will be looking at the possibility of the two characters being able to have children naturally as the measuring stick of determining if the romance will work.
If you haven’t figured it out already I will be talking about reproduction in this post, and will be looking at it from a strict scientific standpoint. I will not be mentioning any sort of explicit details, but I wanted to give a heads up nonetheless. So, if you are looking for anything other than what you might get in a biology class, leave now as you won’t find it here.

Reproduction is how any species can replicate itself to increase its overall population and it is at the core of how the species can survive over time. Thus, how a species reproduces is one of the last things to change as it evolves over time. This will be an important aspect when trying to determine if two different species can reproduce.
In its simplest form, there are six basic steps to human reproduction
1- Find a suitable significant other
2- The male sperm and female egg should come into proximity. This is otherwise known as Slot A inserts into Tab B.
3– The sperm then must fuse with the egg
4- The haploid (23 chromosomes) nuclei of the sperm and egg then fuse to make a new diploid (46 chromosomes) nucleus. This cell is then called a zygote and is the first cell of the new offspring
5- The newly created zygote then travels down the woman’s reproductive system and settles in the womb.
6- Grow and develop
When animals of different species try to mate with each other, 99.9% of the time it doesn’t work. This due to anyone of the 6 steps not working correctly, preventing successful reproduction from occurring. Now I already know what you are thinking.
“What about mules and other hybrids.”
These cross-species matings work because the species involved are very closely related. In the case of a mule it is a male donkey and a female horse (mare) that creates the hybrid mule. A hybrid is an organism arising from parents with different traits. The classification of the animals is listed below.
Species- E. africanus
Subspecies- E. a. asinus
Species- E. Ferus
Subspecies- E. f. Caballus
As you can see both animals are in the same genus and only differ at the sub genus, species, and subspecies level. In scientific terms this is called an intergeneric cross, and that while the donkey and horse are different species, they are still very closely related. This means that steps one through six can be completed, leading to the offspring known as the mule. Intergeneric and interspecies crosses are the most common type of crosses leading to hybrid animals. However, interfamilial hybrids can also be made between animals that vary at the family on down, but it is extremely rare and only seen in a few birds at the present time.
Hybridization does occur in nature (black kite and red kite/ pacific black duck and mallards/ grey wolf and coyote/ salt water crocodiles/ and Siamese crocodiles/ etc), and if these hybrids can continue to reproduce, they can over time become a new species. This occurs because of heterosis or hybrid vigor, where the offspring is superior to the parents for a trait or set of traits. Oh, and if your mind just went to this,
Now back to why humanity would go to the trouble of creating interspecies, intergeneric, or interfamilial hybirds. The answer is simple really: some did it for science, as a way to strengthen the population of endangered species, some just to see if they could mate two species, by accident, or because they wanted to create a better animal for agricultural use, as is the case of the mule, and several bovine hybrids.
Before I can begin to talk about your alien girlfriend there is one last topic I need to cover, and that is the ability of the hybrid to reproduce. As it turns out the vast majority of hybrids are infertile and I need to explain why we need to go back to the six events that occur in the process of reproduction. Since the hybrids are all going to be closely related, the problem isn’t with steps 1-3, but step four.
Each species has a set number of chromosomes that is the same for every individual in that species, in the case of humans that number is 46. For this number to stay the same in every individual, each parent gives half of that number (23) in the form of sperm for the male, and eggs for the female. One sperm (23) fuses with one egg (23), creates the zygote (46), and it is the zygote that develops into the baby. At least this is how it is supposed to work, most of the time.
While different species can have the same number of chromosomes, it is not always the case and this creates a problem for hybrids. Horses have 64 chromosomes, and donkeys 62, since the resulting mule will get half of each parent’s chromosomes it will end up with 63 chromosomes (32 from the horse and 31 from the donkey). While the resulting mule is just fine and dandy its odd number of chromosomes does create a problem down the line. Male mules are infertile and this is due to having neither the horse’s 64 chromosomes or the donkey’s 62 chromosomes. Organisms do not do well when they have the incorrect number of chromosomes, and the same is true for humans where genetic diseases such as Down’s Syndrome (47 chromosomes where the individual has an extra chromosome 21) or Turner’s syndrome (where the woman as 45 chromosomes and is missing an X chromosomes). In both Turner’s and Down’s, the individuals have reproductive issues because of the incorrect number of chromosomes. The known numbers of chromosomes that still allows for a child to be born in humans are 45, 46, 47, 48, and 49.

Again, as I tell my students, there is always an exception to the rule, and there have been 60 reported cases of fertile mules having offspring. Also, some of the other hybrid organisms are able to successfully reproduce, and in those cases, it is found that the species are more closely related than previously thought. They also tend to have the same number of chromosomes, which removes the problem of an incorrect number of chromosomes.
Your Hot Alien Girlfriend
Now with the science out of the way we can finally determine if you can have kids with your hot alien girlfriend.
Step 1- Managed to get a date with the other worldly vision of beauty
Step 2- Build a relationship to the point that you are boyfriend and girlfriend
Step 3- Have kids to please the relatives
I’ve got nothing to say for steps one and two but step three, there is where the biology comes back. First off your alien girlfriend or boyfriend must have near human anatomy and physiology so no Cthulhu monsters please. Why does your significant other need to be human like? Well, that’s so you can successfully complete the horizontal tango, and have the sperm and egg fuse for the creation of a successful zygote. It’s at this point that the chromosome number becomes important again, as you will give 23 chromosomes and your significant other will provide the rest depending on the total number of chromosomes your significant other has. Listed below are the possible combinations based on workable number of human chromosomes as previously stated.

So, if your significant other’s number of chromosomes is somewhere between 44 and 52, you have a chance of having a child. Sadly, this child will be plagued with infertility, so do not expect any grandkids.
So can you have your hot alien girlfriend or boyfriend? Well, the answer to that is yes, if you don’t care about having kids. If you do, then you might have a bit of a problem as you might not be able to have kids depending on the number of chromosomes of your significant other. All in all, because of the unknown variable of chromosome number, having a hot alien girlfriend is plausible.
Extra Science Content
I did not put this in the main post due to my inability to find any truly solid information on the topic, but in the 1920’s a Russian Scientist by the name of Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov, tried to create a humanzee or human chimpanzee hybrid. The idea of a humanzee dates back to the 11th century and scientists over the centuries have discussed the idea, including the father or modern classification, Carl Linnaeus. Humans and Chimpanzees have the same level of similarities as horses and donkeys. On a genetic level, the hybrid should be possible. However, Ilya was unsuccessful in his attempts to make such a hybrid. As for why he attempted such an experiment in the first place, it is not clear, as some reports say it was to discredit creationism, while others say it was to create super soldiers for Joseph Stalin. Similar experiments were attempted in China in 1967, with no success. I did find a research paper from 1977 that found that human sperm can fuse with Gibbon eggs, and speculates on the natural hybridization of humans and apes at some point during human evolution.
On one final note, I know some of you might have seen a discovery channel documentary on an interesting primate by the name of Oliver (1958-2012) that had unique and almost human like features and behaviors. He was thought to be some sort of missing link in human evolution or a Humanzee. Genetic testing proved that he had 48 chromosomes like other chimpanzees and was probably from the Congo. The documentary hinted that he had some other sort of mutation, but I was unable to find any more information on it.
